Indivision are a group I was lucky to come by... - LENAR BLOG

Indivision are a group I was lucky to come by while searching for awesome liquid drum and bass. Their tracks include a wide range of sounds spanning from beautiful pianos and vocals to some heavier basslines and crunchy percussion. I especially like their track “Secret Vision.” Check out this little interview!

How did Indivision come together?

It all started around 2008, I [Markus] saw Andrus’ demos on the local drum and bass forum, we added eachother to AOL messenger, a year later, in October 2009 we did our first collab (‘Femme Fatale’) - it was a success. So, after the track was finished, we instantly  started talking about forming a duo together - this is how it all begun.

As you know, Indivision is actually a trio. Our DJ - Kaarel - joined the group in the early 2010. He was asking some tunes from us to play, after we heard his set on the national radio of Estonia - it was off the hook! - we offered him to join. He didn’t hesitate.

How has your style progressed since then?

Over the 2 years we have been together our style has changed quite a bit. In the first place we were making minimal sounding tracks, it was pretty new and interesting sub-genre for us back then. Some time passed and we found our new love - liquid drum and bass. Although 95% of our tracks have liquid funk influence from minimal to neuro funk tracks (yes, we have made a few neuro funk tracks aswell!).

Currently I’d say we make dancefloor music - punchy drums, complex melodies, heavy basslines.

What can people expect from Indivison in 2012?

At the moment we are working on an EP for John B’s Beta Recordings, it should be dropped in March. All the four tunes on it are collaborations with an artist called Cosmic, also there will be featured well-known vocalist, like Shaz Sparks. In 2012 we will be making heaps of tunes together with Cosmic - the EP is just a start.

Some big time names have remixed our tracks, for instance Phetsta, Grafix, Mistabishi. Hopefully those remixes will come out during next year.

Hopefully people will see us live in many countries, at least in Europe - this our new year wish.

What makes all of you work so well together?

I think that we have pretty much the same taste in music, also we can make compromises if needed. We all work hard and we have the same goal - to become professional musicians.

How do you prepare yourself for a creative day in the studio?

The day before is important, I for instance go to sleep rather early - a good night sleep is important - and wake-up early in the morning, for me it’s the best time to work on the beats. Before I start to write music, I like to watch some TV shows or a movie - we get loads of inspiration from these. Sometimes, though, a gig from last night gives us the creativity!

Tell us about some of your favourite plugins!

We are using lately standard stuff, when we were less experienced, we added loads of different effects to a channel, but over the time, we learnt that it wrong thing to do. Keep it as simple as possible.

A few effects which we use in every our track: Camel Audio CamelPhat, FL Parametic EQ2, Fruity Reverb, Ultrafunk delay, Sonnox stuff (EQ, Limiter, Dynamics plug-in and Transient Modulator), FL Limiter, Izotope Ozone, Kjaerhus Classic Delay.

Our favourite synths are: NI Massive, ReFx Nexus2, LennarDigital Sylenth1 and NI Pro-53.

Who are some artists that inspire you?

Michael Jackson, A-ha, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Modjo, Bonobo, Faithless, Zemfira, The Clash, Rue De Soleil, Planet Funk, Daft Punk, Logistics, Blu Mar Ten, Ferenz Liszt, Raimond Valgre.

Why did the dinosaurs die?

They probably were bored to death - I can’t imagine my life without music. :)

Any last words?

We would like to thank all the people who have supported us in those 2 magical years. Hats off to our fans - you keep us motivated!

Also, if you want to become a producer, the best tip is to work hard! Like we have said before,’Work beats talent when talent fails to work hard’ - we are where we are thanks to the hours we have put in our music, we don’t have any musical background, we can’t play any instrument, music theory is like a rocket science for us.
