KLAYPEX - Interview

I recently came across the mainly dubstep duo,  Klaypex and was drawn into their song “Lights”

Now I usually am not big on dubstep or tracks with vocals with certain fx but in both cases, it works with the tune. This particular track has racked up over 1.5 million views on youtube.

I took some time to listen to several tracks and got some pretty bad ass basslines and catchy vocal hooks. I encourage any bass music lover to check this dynamic duo out.

I decided to have a little interview them!

Tell us about how the members of Klaypex came together!

Johnny and Mark have been best friends since they were 16. They both had recently immigrated to Canada, and met up at an after school program for new kids.

The program was pretty lame, but the friends we made there were not. Thanks to that program, Johnny and Mark became best friends and have remained since.

Johnny had always enjoyed playing the guitar from time to time but never took it seriously until a drummer friend of his offered to jam together. Mark being Johnny’s best friend, he was always there when those jam sessions took place. Johnny wanted mark to also take part in it, so Johnny pushed mark to pick up and learn Electric Bass, as that’s always been Mark’s favorite instrument anyways. Mark learned the Bass astoundingly quickly and within weeks was able to play Sweet Child O’ Mine fluently!

A few months later, simply jamming got boring, and Johnny and Mark wanted to take it to the next level and began writing music into Guitar Pro. Soon after, Johnny noticed his Mac had Garageband, which encouraged him to record one of their tracks. Once that happened, our first rock band was born.

Since then, over about three years, we’ve been through three band phases which included stages of Alternative Space Rock, R&B, Pop, Industrial, Soundtrack Music, Acoustic Sets, Rap, Orchestral/Piano compositions, and Electronic music. We’ve obviously moved past Garageband by that point ;-]

Back in the summer of 2011, we found the genre we really really loved the most and stuck with it, which is when Klaypex was born!

How do you prepare yourselves for a day of creativity?

There’s a lot that we try to do to help us get into that mindset. Usually, we find that the best way to let ideas flow is to fill oneself with emotional energy.

Sometimes, when we feel a bit devoid of that, we’ll go watch a moving film, or go see a stunningly choreographed show, or catch a concert by one of our favorite artists!

Those sort of emotional reactions really help to fill us with that energy which creativity and ideas are formed out of.

Love your tracks with Sara Kay! What do you like about working with her? (Let us know if we can show her any love on a fanpage etc!)

Sara Kay is a close friend of ours with a fantastic voice! She helped us do the characters we have on our Facebook profile at the moment.

We asked her to sing on some of the tracks and she was more than happy to do it! Unfortunately, singing for her is more of a loved hobby, so she never did set up fan pages or social mediums.

Being such a dear friend of ours, it was a true pleasure working with her!

What plugins are Klaypex loving at the moment?

Answering that question would likely take up this whole page! We are huge gear heads, but lacking the space and money for serious gear, we’ve become pretty serious plugin-heads.

We use most plugins from the NI Komplete pack, as well as a bunch of stuff from the Waves bundles. Then there’s the instruments like Alchemy, Omnisphere, Trillian (SS stuff in general is to die for), FAW’s Circle, and lot’s more! When it comes to FX plugins, we adore Stutter Edit, Turnado, and Effectrix, to name a select few.

Is there anyone else you would love to collaborate with?

At the moment, we’re knee deep in producing our 2nd effort which we hope to keep all-original. If and when we have the time though, we’d love to collaborate with just about anyone we find interesting! From rock to metal and back to electronic. We’re pretty open minded people, and we think that if someone has a good sound, they’re worth collaborating with; and the more different the genre, the more interesting the result will be.

Tell me about a person you find inspiring

Regardless of genre, one person we find to be very inspiring is Thom Yorke. He shows us that music can be new, different, and completely original to the fullest extent— and people will love you more for it.

Radiohead likely has some of the most loyal and loving fans out there. When compared to modern Pop sensations, the difference is astounding! They are loved for the same reason

The Beatles were loved so much back in their day. They introduced a sound that wasn’t derived from other sounds before it; or at least not to the extent that most bands derive their sounds from. That’s a pretty inspirational story for us at least =]

What can people expect from you in 2012?

For 2012, people can expect to see a lot more of us! Compared to what we have planned for 2012, what we have out at the moment is minimal. We’re planning a revamped image as well as tour dates and our first full-length, all original album! We feel that as producers, we’ve really improved since Loose Dirt, and we couldn’t be more excited to hear what our fans have to say about our new music!

If there were no limits and you could play anywhere in the entire  universe, where would you go?

Seeing as the characters that represent us are meant to be aliens, that’s a very fitting question!

…And also not so easy to answer! If there were truly no limits, we’d probably set up multiple ridiculously huge floating stages all over Earth overlooking entire city-sized fields. We’d have massive LED screens and mind bogglingly large projectors to make the visuals accessible to everyone, as well as thousands of powerful lights and lasers! Now THAT would be one awesome show! Or we just let our imaginations take it too far!!

Why did the dinosaurs die?

We’re not sure… But we think Craig was pretty upset about it:

Anything else you want to add?

Sure! 1+1=2

Thanks again so much for having us!
